Drug Medical Information

Every five years, the Food and Nutritional Board of the National Academy of Sciences' National Research Council reviews the recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) of certain essential nutrients that supply the body with the known nutritional needs for maintaining health in people in the United States. The margin of safety is substantial, and it is estimated that two thirds of the recommended amounts is adequate for most healthy people. Failing to meet theallowances for one day does not mean you have a deficient diet; the RDAs, however, should average out over a five- to eight-day period. Separate RDAs are provided for infants, children, males, females, and pregnant and lactating women.
The most recent RDAs are shown in Table. Unless computer software and/or elaborate record keeping is used, the RDA does not provide a practical means of evaluating your daily nutrition. A much easier approach involves the use of the nutrition pyr-amid and general dietary recommendations.
