Iron deficiency anemia, a major health problem in the United States, is common in older infants, children, women of childbearing age, pregnant women, and low-income people. People must also be aware, however, that too much iron can be dangerous. Iron toxicity is rare, but a condition called iron overload occurs when the body is overwhelmed with too much iron given by vein (by blood transfusion) or when too much iron is absorbed because of hereditary defects, heavy supplementation, and alcohol abuse (which increases absorption). Iron overload can cause tissue and liver damage. Rapid ingestion of large amounts of iron can also cause sudden death. Iron overdose is the second most common cause of accidental poisoning in small children. High blood-iron levels may also be related to heart disease in men.
Iron is more easily absorbed from meat, fish, and poultry (heme iron) than it is from vegetables (non-heme iron). Twice the volume of vegetable iron is absorbed when vegetables and meats are consumed during the same meal.
