NUTRITION: SPECIAL NEEDS OF THE ACTIVE INDIVIDUAL MAINTAINING ELECTROLYTE BALANCE

Electrolytes lost through sweat and water vapor from the lungs must be replaced. It is the proper balance of each electrolyte that prevents dehydration, cramping, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Too much salt without adequate water, for example, actually draws fluid from the cells, precipitates nausea, and increases urination and potassium loss. A salt supplement is therefore rarely needed, in spite of the weather or intensity and duration of exercise. The salt that occurs naturally in food, salt in processed food, and that used from the salt shaker will provide sufficient sodium even for active individuals.
Potassium is critical to maintaining regular heartbeat, and it also plays a role in carbohydrate and protein metabolism. Profuse sweating over several days can deplete potassium stores by as much as 3 mg per day. The average diet provides only 1.5 to 2.5 mg daily. If you sweat profusely and exercise almost daily, you may need five to eight servings of potassium-rich foods each day. Excellent sources of potassium include orange juice, skim milk, bananas, dried fruits, and potatoes. A potassium supplement is not recommended since too much potassium is just as dangerous as too little.
Ionic chloride is part of hydrochloric acid and serves to maintain the strong acidity of the stomach. Loss of too much chloride upsets the acid-base balance of the body. Adding chlorine to public water provides this valuable element and makes water safe for human consumption.
Water alone will not restore electrolyte balance, One alternative is to use commercially prepared, concentrated electrolyte drinks, providing you alter their contents. Some of these drinks contain too much sugar and should be diluted with twice the normal amount of water to increase absorption time and prevent a rapid drop in blood-glucose level shortly after consumption.
While it is useful before and after exercise, the addition of electrolytes to water is of minimal value during a workout. Research suggests that electrolyte replacement is also secondary in importance to water replacement during rehydration after exercise. Fruit juices have the same pitfalls as commercial electrolyte drinks, and the concentrated varieties should be diluted with at least twice the amount of water suggested on the container.
